OVERVIEW/MISSION
The Sustainable Apparel Coalition says its vision is: "An apparel industry that produces no unnecessary environmental harm and has a positive impact on the people and communities associated with its activities." The SAC stresses that its work is a collaborative effort that it sees leading its industry.
BACKGROUND
The Sustainable Apparel Coalition was officially launched on March 1, 2011, to "successfully frame a pre-competitive, universal index to measure and benchmark sustainable practices and products for use by the entire apparel and footwear sector." The New York Times provided visibility to the launch.
Members initiated the coalition's founding and support its work through annual dues.
STRUCTURE
The SAC was founded as an invitation-only membership organization; it may open membership in 2012.
METHODOLOGIES / OPERATIONS
The Sustainable Apparel Index will be designed "for measuring the environmental and social performance of apparel products and the supply chains that produce them." The SAC says the index must be transparent and verifiable. Though the index is still in development; Version 1.0 is scheduled for release in mid-2011. The 1.0 index shows three assessment modules: the product, the supplier facility, and the brand and retailer. Assessments will look, as appropriate, at materials, packaging, manufacturing, transportation, use and service, and end of life.
