OVERVIEW/MISSION
The Stockholm International Water Institute describes itself as “a policy institute whose diverse Stockholm-based, internationally-oriented programmes and activities contribute to finding sustainable solutions to the world’s escalating water crisis.”

BACKGROUND
The Stockholm International Water Institute grew out of the Stockholm Water Symposia, which began in 1991 and have become an annual conference called World Water Week in Stockholm. SIWI looks at water in the context of various “key issues” -- in 2012 these included efficiency and food production, green economy, food security, and partnerships.

STRUCTURE
SIWI is incorporated through the Stockholm Water Foundation, a nonprofit organization. SIWI was formerly part of Stockholm Vatten AB, the city’s water and wastewater organization, which held the first Stockholm Water Symposium, in 1991
