New Book from Governance & Accountability Institute, Strategic Governance, Offers Business Leaders Opportunity to Integrate Governance with Strategy, Risk, Culture & Corporate Responsibility to Achieve Financial, Environmental & Social Sustainability (Source: Governance and Accountability Institute) NEW YORK--Boards and managers seeking direction about the “hows” and “whys” of making their business more sustainable and to enhance public reporting on the company’s sustainability performance and progress have a new resource: Strategic Governance. The book is designed by the authors to provide business leaders with “must-have” knowledge that helps them “walk the talk” of an integrated approach to financial, environmental, and social responsibility. Executives can then better “talk the talk” of sustainability through an integrated reporting framework based on the same strategic governance system of purpose, principles, and methodology they utilized to achieve it.
Organizations are focusing on measuring performance aligned with pay, Mercer survey shows (Source:The Financial.com)  In response to the ongoing legislative and regulatory demands regarding executive compensation, organizations are focusing efforts on measuring performance and aligning it with pay. Nearly two-thirds of companies are introducing new financial performance measures in their annual incentive programs, according to a new survey by Mercer. Mercer’s Executive Compensation and Performance 2011 survey, conducted in November 2010, examines how organizations are addressing executive compensation in 2011 from a short- and long-term incentive design perspective and addressing the new legislation regarding say-on-pay.  Associated Profiles : Mercer

Calpers Recoups Lehman Crash Loses as Taxpayers Face Higher Cost ( Source: BusinessWeek)  The California Public Employees’ Retirement System, the largest U.S. public pension, is now worth just as much as when Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. went bankrupt in 2008 and wiped out $6.8 trillion in U.S. stock-market value in six months. Even with the gain, Calpers today has only about 70 percent of the money it needs to cover benefits promised to government workers. The pension fund, which lost almost a third of its value in the crash, has had to demand more from taxpayers to cover those costs even as Governor Jerry Brown proposes a budget that cuts out vision care for poor children and may force 350,000 students out of community colleges. Pension fund gets $4.25M in deal(Source: Albany Times-Union)  ALBANY -- State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli said Thursday his office has agreed to a $4.25 million settlement in a lawsuit against Merrill Lynch and Bank of America, its post-collapse purchaser. The suit claimed the financial firms had duped investors about the extent of Merrill's role in the subprime mortgage bubble, artificially inflating its value. DiNapoli claimed the deception resulted in eventual losses to the state's $133 billion Common Retirement Fund, which the comptroller oversees as the sole trustee. Pension Reform Debate a Fight Over Facts(Source: Sunshine State News)  Sen. Jeremy Ring, D-Margate, said Wednesday he is waiting for facts before he begins crafting legislation on pension reform - but in the debate so far, both sides claim they have "facts" on their side. Officials from the AFL-CIO stated earlier this week that the Florida Retirement System was financially sound and not in need of reform, but Ring disputes that. He said the FRS should be fully funded, not at its current 87 percent rate. Associated Profiles:  Florida Retirement System Pension Plan
