Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity (Yale University)
KEY PARTNERS
Part of Yale University. Rudd Foundation financing.

OVERVIEW/MISSION
The Rudd Center’s FAQ includes a question about the Center’s purpose, which it answers with this: “The Rudd Center seeks to improve the world’s diet, prevent obesity, and reduce weight stigma by establishing creative connections between science and public policy, developing targeted research, encouraging frank dialogue among key constituents, and expressing a dedicated commitment to real change.”

BACKGROUND
The Rudd Center was formed in 2005: it held a meeting in August 2005 that sought to “assemble leading people [with differing opinions] from around the world expert in science, private-public partnerships, business, law, and bioethics.”

STRUCTURE
The Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity employs some staff members full-time; others are paid by Yale University or other funders. The Center is located at Yale in New Haven, Connecticut (USA).

METHODOLOGIES / OPERATIONS
The Center addresses public health issues related to diet and obesity through several types of activity, including public education and research. The Center cites economic costs of obesity, writing “Obesity-related illnesses cost the United States USD$117 billion in 2000, and the bill will only grow as more Americans continue to gain weight.”
The Rudd Center’s publications include newsletters, where entries for the Rudd Center Health Digest at the time of our February 2012 update covered topics including processed foods, school meals, and marketing practices. Policy briefs and reports are also available online, as are journal articles. Rudd retired its blog, Rudd Sound Bites, in 2011, but an online archive is available.
