Alfred Modugno has more than four decades of experience in corporate communications and marketing, helping companies create and implement targeted communications programs that move audiences, address and shape perceptions and help to resolve issues. His experience encompasses leading extensive programs with firms in financial and professional services, risk consulting, insurance, and more than a dozen other industries.
In addition to his current role with G&A Institute, Al is an independent editorial consultant and writer. Since 2010, he has provided a wide range of editorial services, content development, and public relations for more than 25 different businesses in commercial insurance, risk management, law, accounting, technology and finance. He has also been a contributing writer to Global Finance Magazine and other financial publications.
For more than two decades, he was with Marsh & McLennan Companies (NYSE:MMC) where he held communications positions of increasing responsibility, culminating with his appointment as senior vice president and U.S. head of external communications. At Marsh, Al provided strategic communications support for senior leadership and led corporate and marketing-related public relations campaigns for more than 20 industry and risk practices and 85 individual offices across the U.S. and Canada.
A member of Marsh’s global crisis communications team, he helped the firm navigate high-profile crises, including: unprecedented legal action against the firm and its parent company brought by the New York State Attorney General and NYS Department of Insurance; subsequent actions by attorneys general in numerous other states; the related departure of the firm’s CEO; significant loss of employee life in the 9/11 terrorist attack; loss of files containing client personal data; and various operational disruptions in many areas of the world from pandemics and natural disasters.
Earlier, Al led global media relations for insurance broker Johnson & Higgins (acquired by M&M in 1997). He was responsible for global communications, including the US, Canada, UK, Asia and Latin America. He also held marketing and communications positions with Chemical Bank (now JPMorgan Chase), J. Walter Thompson’s Brouillard Communications, Equitable Life (now part of AXA), MONY Financial Services, and specialist public relations firms in New York.
He began his career with Boerner Communications and was vice president and account executive on such clients as Reynolds Metals, Royal Jordanian Airlines, CityTrust (bank), and Halaby International. He also was part of a global team organizing the Middle East Civil Aviation Conferences held in Amman, Jordan in 1977 and 1979 under the auspices of H.M. King Hussein.
His communications experience encompasses staff, management positions or consulting engagements in the airline industry, aviation/aerospace, banking/financial services, healthcare, medical and pharmaceutical, insurance, professional associations, food/beverage, chemical manufacturing, direct marketers, recycling and environmental, sales training, college/university, tourism and travel, farming, horticultural, and museum systems.
Al holds an M.B.A. in International Finance from Baruch College/CUNY’s Zicklin School of Business and a B.A. in English Literature from SUNY Plattsburgh. A resident of Tenafly, NJ, he is married and has a daughter in graduate school.
