Lois Yurow formed Investor Communications Services, LLC in 1997 to help public companies prepare the disclosure documents they file with the Securities and Exchange Commission and distribute to the public. She specializes in converting complex legal, business, and financial documents into plain English.
Professional Background
Lois began her career as a corporate and securities attorney, first with Schiff Hardin & Waite in Chicago, and then with Pitney, Hardin, Kipp & Szuch in Morristown, New Jersey. Her work included helping public companies understand and fulfill their obligations under state and federal securities laws, advising issuers and underwriters engaged in public offerings of debt and equity, and counseling issuers planning private placements.
Publications
Lois has been a co-author of Mutual Fund Regulation and Compliance Handbook, an annually updated publication, since 2008 (Thomson Reuters). She contributed a chapter entitled “Plain English Writing for Compliance Professionals” to Modern Compliance: Best Practices for Securities & Finance, Vol. II (2017) (Wolters Kluwer).
From 1999 until 2006, Lois was managing editor of Wall Street Lawyer, a monthly newsletter focused on securities law. She served as managing editor of realcorporatelawyer.com, a (now defunct) website serving corporate and securities lawyers, for five years. Her articles have appeared in IR Update, The M&A Lawyer, and Law Practice magazines, and New Jersey Law Journal.
Speeches & Workshops
Lois has presented workshops on plain English, disclosure, and other securities law matters to audiences including investor relations officers, auditors, investment advisers, compliance officers, and compensation managers at a variety of professional gatherings.
In 1998, Lois was an adjunct professor in the M.A. Program in Corporate and Organizational Communication at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.
Education
Lois graduated from Brandeis University with a degree in economics and legal studies, and earned her law degree, with high honors, from The National Law Center at The George Washington University. She earned a Master’s degree in Communication and Information Studies from Rutgers University in 2016.
Memberships
Lois is a member of the National Investor Relations Institute, Clarity (an international movement to simplify legal language), and Scribes (an association of legal writers and editors).
Personal
Lois and her husband have two (mostly) grown sons and two dogs. She is an avid cook and exerciser, and a long-serving ESL tutor.
