Water is in Focus for 2009 Research Efforts of the Global Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)

BY: CARBON DISCLOSURE PROJECT

(November 19, 2009) – Underscoring the growing importance of “water issues” to investors, and the corporate community, today the Carbon Disclosure Project announced that it would add water issues to its global agenda. Shortly, a questionnaire will be sent to 300 of the world’s largest companies by market cap in water-sensitive industries.

Members of the Governance & Accountability Institute are available for comment on the effect of the CDP’s announcement on world corporations.

Industries affected could include: chemicals; fast moving consumer goods; food and beverage; forest and paper products; mining; pharmaceuticals; power generation; and semiconductor manufacturing. In following years a larger body of corporations will be queried, including those operating in regions facing “water stress.”

Signatories to the CDP include banks, pension funds, asset managers and insurance companies. All will have access to corporate responses to CDP Water Disclosure research. CDP claims USD$90 trillion AUM for participants in this investor-backed initiative which has had a robust research and reporting effort focused on carbon issues (especially CO2 emissions).

Supporters of the water issues effort include Norges Bank Investment Management, managers of the huge Norway Sovereign Wealth Fund (largest SWF in Europe, second largest in the world after Abu Dhabi’s SWF); Schroders (UK); APG Asset Management (managers of the ABP pension fund); and Dexia Asset Management.

What will CDP asking? Corporations are to be asked to measure and disclose information on risks and opportunities of their own operations and for their supply chains, water management, and possible improvement plans.
